Wedding Thank-You Notes: What to Write & When to Send Them

Handwritten wedding thank-you cards on a desk

Thank-you notes are the last act of your wedding — and one of the most remembered. A brief, personal note means more than any grand gesture. Here's how to write them efficiently without losing the warmth.

When to send them

  • The traditional guideline is within 3 months of the wedding.
  • Start early — write notes for gifts received before the wedding as they arrive.
  • Set a goal: 5 notes per sitting. You'll be done in a few weeks without it feeling like a chore.

What to include

  • Address them by name — 'Dear Sarah and Tom', not 'Dear Guest'.
  • Mention the specific gift — 'Thank you for the beautiful serving bowl' shows you noticed.
  • Say how you'll use it — 'We can't wait to use it for our first dinner party.'
  • Thank them for being there — their presence mattered.
  • Sign off warmly — 'With love,' or 'Warmly,' plus both your names.

Templates to adapt

For a gift

'Dear [Name], Thank you so much for the [gift]. We absolutely love it and [how you'll use it]. It meant so much to have you celebrate with us — your warmth and energy made the day unforgettable. With love, [Your Names]'

For cash or a fund contribution

'Dear [Name], Thank you for your incredibly generous gift. It's going towards [honeymoon / our first home / something specific], and we're so grateful. Celebrating with you was one of the highlights of the day. With love, [Your Names]'

For attendance (no gift)

'Dear [Name], Thank you for being part of our wedding day. Having you there meant the world to us, and we loved [a specific moment — 'seeing you on the dance floor' / 'catching up at dinner']. With love, [Your Names]'

Tips for getting them done

  • Buy the cards before the wedding — you'll thank yourself later.
  • Use your guest list as your tracking sheet — check off as you go.
  • Handwrite if possible — even messy handwriting feels more personal than print.
  • Don't overthink it. Short and genuine beats long and generic.
The best thank-you note is the one that arrives — not the one that's perfect.
