Wedding Toast Etiquette: Rules for the Mic

We've all been there: a Best Man grabs the mic, goes completely off script, and rambles for 15 awkward minutes while the soup gets cold. Toasts are wonderful, but they require strict boundaries.

Who Traditionally Speaks?

• The parents of the couple (or whoever is hosting)
• The Maid of Honor
• The Best Man
• The Couple (to thank their guests for coming)

The Golden Rules

• The 4-Minute Limit: The absolute maximum length for any speech is 4 minutes. Around the 3-minute mark, guests stop listening and start looking at their phones.
• No Inside Jokes: If 90% of the room doesn't understand the joke, don't tell it.
• Stay Sober: Wait until after the speech to hit the open bar. Liquid courage usually translates to rambling on a microphone.
