How to Make Your Wedding Guest List (Without the Drama)

Before the venue, before the budget, before almost anything — comes the guest list. It quietly decides the size of your space, the cost of your catering and the feel of your whole day. Get it roughly right early, and every later decision gets easier.
How to decide who to invite
Start broad, then refine in tiers. Most couples find it easiest to build outward from the center:
- Tier 1 — non-negotiables: immediate family and the people you cannot imagine the day without.
- Tier 2 — close circle: extended family and long-time friends you're actively in touch with.
- Tier 3 — the nice-to-haves: colleagues, plus-ones and wider acquaintances.
A simple test for the tricky cases: have we spoken in the last year, and would we happily sit down to dinner with them? If not, it's a kind 'no'.
The A-list / B-list method
If your dream list is bigger than your venue, build an A-list and a B-list. Send A-list invitations first; as regrets come in, invite from the B-list. Send save-the-dates early enough that no one can tell the difference.
A clear plus-one policy
- Offer plus-ones consistently — for example, to married, engaged or long-term partners.
- Address invitations by name so expectations are clear.
- Decide your stance on children early, and apply it to everyone the same way.
Track RSVPs without losing your mind
The chaos usually isn't the list — it's the replies. Keep one place for names, party size, meal choices, table and RSVP status, and your live headcount takes care of itself.
- Record every reply the moment it arrives.
- Capture meal preferences and dietary needs alongside the RSVP.
- Chase missing replies about three weeks before the final headcount is due.
A guest list isn't about who you can fit — it's about who you'd miss.
