Do You Have to Invite Coworkers to Your Wedding? The Modern Etiquette Guide

As you compile your guest list, you will inevitably hit the "coworker conundrum." You spend 40 hours a week with these people, but wedding plates are expensive, and venue capacities are tight. Do you actually have to invite your coworkers to your wedding?

The short answer is: No, you do not. But navigating the office politics of your wedding guest list requires some tact.

The "All or Nothing" vs. "Actual Friends" Rule

When it comes to coworkers, modern etiquette suggests two main approaches:

1. The Actual Friends Rule

It is perfectly acceptable to only invite coworkers that you see socially outside of the office. If you've never grabbed dinner with them, gone to their house, or hung out on a weekend, you don't need to invite them. True friends will understand the distinction.

2. The Department Rule

If you work on a very small, tight-knit team (e.g., a department of 4 people), it is generally best to invite the whole team or none of them to avoid hurt feelings.

Do I Have to Invite My Boss?

In the past, inviting your boss was considered mandatory. Today, it is not. However, if you are inviting a significant number of your coworkers (especially those at your peer level), it is a polite professional courtesy to invite your direct manager.

How to Keep Office Talk to a Minimum

If you are not inviting everyone from the office, be mindful of your behavior:

  • Don't hand out physical invitations at the office. Mail them to their homes instead.
  • Keep wedding talk at work to a minimum. If someone asks, keep your answers vague and polite.
  • Don't discuss bachelor/bachelorette parties or showers at the water cooler.

What to Say When Someone Asks About Their Invite

If a coworker directly asks if they are invited and they aren't on the list, the best defense is the venue capacity or budget.

"We would love to celebrate with everyone, but our venue has a strict capacity limit, so we are keeping it to just family and a few close friends. Let's definitely grab drinks to celebrate after the honeymoon, though!"
