Wedding Photography Shot List: 60+ Must-Have Photos

Photographer capturing a candid wedding moment

Your photographer is a professional — they know what to shoot. But a shared shot list makes sure your must-haves don't get missed in the rush of the day. Share this list at your planning meeting.

Getting ready (15–20 shots)

  • Detail shots: dress, shoes, rings, invitation suite, bouquet, perfume.
  • Bride/groom getting dressed — lacing up, cufflinks, veil moment.
  • With parents: mom zipping the dress, dad's first look.
  • With the wedding party: champagne toast, group energy.
  • Venue/room details: the space before guests arrive.

Ceremony (15–20 shots)

  • Processional: each bridesmaid/groomsman, the bride's entrance.
  • Reactions: the groom/bride seeing each other, parents' faces.
  • Ring exchange and vows.
  • The first kiss.
  • Recessional: the walk back down the aisle.
  • Wide shots of the venue and the full guest view.

Portraits (10–15 shots)

  • Couple alone: romantic, editorial, candid laughing.
  • With each set of parents and siblings.
  • Full wedding party.
  • Extended family group (plan these in advance to save time).
  • Grandparents — don't forget this one.

Reception (15–20 shots)

  • Room details: table settings, centerpieces, place cards, cake.
  • Grand entrance and first dance.
  • Parent dances.
  • Toasts and speeches — the speaker AND the couple's reaction.
  • Cake cutting.
  • Candid dancing, guest interactions, kids on the dance floor.
  • Send-off / exit shot.

Pro tips for the shot list

  • Keep the list to one page — your photographer needs flexibility, not micromanagement.
  • Flag the 5–10 shots that matter MOST to you.
  • Share the family group shot list in advance so people are easy to find.
  • Discuss timing — great photos need good light, so schedule golden hour if possible.
You can't rewind the day — but a great shot list makes sure it's all captured.
