How to Handle a Rain Plan for an Outdoor Wedding

If you are planning an outdoor wedding, you don't just need a Plan A. You need a Plan B that you love almost as much as Plan A. Here is how to rain-proof your wedding day.
Ask About the Rain Plan Before You Book
When touring venues, always ask to see the indoor alternative. If the indoor option is a dark, depressing basement that you hate, do not book the venue. You will spend the entire year stressing over the weather forecast.
The Logistics of Tents
- If your Plan B is a tent, secure a tent reservation early. Many rental companies require a non-refundable deposit to 'hold' a tent for your date.
- Don't just rent a canopy. If it rains, you need sidewalls. If it's cold, you need heaters. If it's muddy, you need flooring. Tents can quickly become as expensive as an indoor venue.
Embrace the Weather
- Buy a dozen matching clear umbrellas for the wedding party. They look fantastic in photos and let the light through.
- Have towels on standby to dry off chairs if a brief shower passes through.
- Trust your photographer. Overcast skies and rain actually create incredibly soft, romantic lighting for photography.
A rainy wedding day is only a disaster if you pretend it's sunny.
