How to Write Wedding Vows (Templates & Examples)

Couple exchanging wedding vows

Writing your own vows is incredibly romantic in theory, but often terrifying in practice. Staring at a blank page the week of the wedding is a stress you don't need. The good news? Great vows all follow a very similar, simple structure.

The 4-Part Vow Template

  • 1. The Anchor (Who they are to you): Start by grounding the moment. 'From the moment we met at [Place], I knew...' or 'You are my best friend and my greatest adventure.'
  • 2. The 'I Love You Because': Share 2-3 specific things you love about them. Mix the profound with the everyday. 'I love your relentless ambition, and I love that you always leave the last slice of pizza for me.'
  • 3. The Promises: This is the core. Make 3-5 promises. Some serious, some light. 'I promise to choose you every day. I promise to support your dreams. And I promise to kill all the spiders.'
  • 4. The Future (The close): Look ahead. 'I can't wait to build a life with you. Until we are old and grey, you have my heart.'

Tips for Delivery

  • Keep it between 1 to 2 minutes when spoken aloud (about 150-300 words).
  • Print them out or write them in a nice vow book — reading from a glowing phone screen ruins the photos.
  • Practice out loud. Things that look good on paper can sometimes be hard to say.
The best vows aren't poetry. They are just the honest truth.
