The Groom's Wedding Checklist: Every Task, Start to Finish

Wedding content skews heavily toward brides, but a modern groom typically owns a real slice of the plan: attire, rings, the groomsmen, his speech, transport, the honeymoon and the legal paperwork. Here's that slice as a clean checklist.
9–12 months before
- Build the budget together and agree who tracks it
- Choose your groomsmen (and how you'll ask them)
- Start the venue and vendor search as a team
- Research suits vs. tuxedos — made-to-measure needs 4–6 months
4–6 months before
- Order your suit or tux; coordinate groomsmen attire and payment expectations
- Book the honeymoon (passports valid? visas needed?)
- Choose the wedding bands together — allow 6–8 weeks for sizing
- Plan the bachelor party with your best man (delegate it, actually)
1–2 months before
- Write your vows and speech — 3 minutes max, one heartfelt story, thank the parents
- Apply for the marriage license (check your local validity window)
- Final fitting; break in your shoes now, not on the day
- Confirm transport for the wedding party
- Buy thank-you gifts for groomsmen and parents
The week of & the day
- Haircut 3–4 days before (not the day before)
- Hand rings + license to your best man
- Eat breakfast, hydrate, and be dressed 30 minutes earlier than you think you need
- Take five minutes alone together as newlyweds — the day moves fast
A groom with a checklist is a groom who actually enjoys his wedding day.
What is the groom traditionally responsible for?
When should the groom buy his suit?
How long should the groom's speech be?
