How to Write a Best Man Speech (That Actually Lands)
By The Everplanner Team6 min read

Every best man speech starts with the same thought: what am I going to say? Good news — the structure is simple, and you don't need to be a comedian. You just need to be genuine.
The 4-part structure
- 1. Thank & introduce yourself (30 seconds) — Thank the couple for choosing you, introduce yourself briefly.
- 2. A story about the groom (60–90 seconds) — One specific, vivid story that shows his character. Funny is great but not required.
- 3. What changed when they met (60 seconds) — How the partner makes them better, happier, or calmer. This is the emotional pivot.
- 4. The toast (15 seconds) — Short, warm, and clear. Raise the glass.
Timing
Aim for 3 to 5 minutes. Under 3 feels rushed; over 5 and you're losing the room. Read it aloud three times while timing yourself.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Inside jokes nobody else understands.
- Ex-girlfriend stories (hard no).
- Reading off your phone with your head down the whole time.
- Drinking too much before your turn.
- Making it about you rather than the couple.
Delivery tips
- Practice out loud at least 5 times, ideally to a friend.
- Use bullet-point notes, not a script — it keeps you natural.
- Make eye contact with the couple and the room, not the paper.
- Slow down. Nerves make you rush.
Speak from the heart, keep it short, and raise the glass.
