75 First Dance Songs for Every Kind of Couple
By The Everplanner Team7 min read

The only rule that matters: pick a song that sounds like the two of you, not like a wedding playlist. Aim for 2–3 minutes of dancing (ask your DJ to fade out — most songs are longer than a first dance should be).

How to actually choose
- Shortlist 5 songs each, swap lists, and keep any overlap — that's your answer.
- Read the full lyrics before committing (many "love songs" are breakup songs in disguise).
- Slow-dance to the finalists in your kitchen. If it feels awkward at home, it will on the floor.
- Tell your DJ or band the exact version and where to fade.
Nobody remembers whether your song was cool. Everyone remembers whether you looked happy.
How long should a first dance be?
Two to three minutes. Ask your DJ to fade the song around 2:30 — long enough for the moment and the photos, short enough that you never feel stranded mid-floor.
Do we have to do a first dance?
No. Plenty of couples skip it or swap it for a group opening dance. If you're dreading it, a 60-second dance that fades into inviting everyone up is a graceful compromise.
Should we take dance lessons before the wedding?
One or two lessons help most couples relax — you learn a basic hold, a sway and a simple ending. Book them about a month out, once your song is chosen.
